現地時間29日、トランプ氏は自身の公式Twitter上において「適性と確信を持った人物が、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙を買収し、（Fake Newsのない）正常な経営を行うか、廃刊すべきである」とツイート。
トランプ氏がここまで激昂している理由には大きく分けて2つある。1つは、同氏が大統領令の中で、中東シリア難民をはじめとした7ヶ国の国民の入国を規制したことに対し、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙が痛烈に批判したため。また、もう1つは同紙が以前からトランプ氏に対して過小評価を続け、批判的な態度をとってきたため。
トランプ氏は、現地時間28日付のツイートで、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙以外に、ワシントン・ポスト紙に対しても批判的なコメントを発信している。
